English activities at DEMS for June 2022
What happened this month ? Several activities were completed in June, 2022, at Centre des hautes études militaires (CHEM) and Ecole de guerre (EDG).
Debating - Transatlantic dialogues
On June 3, Ecole de Guerre hosted the first in-person installment of the Transatlantic Dialogues in partnership with GWU. Students prestigious American colleges discussed how the United States and Europe ought to cooperatively implement an element of the New Urban Agenda. The officers officiated as judges. They evaluated the projects’ level of achievement, the teams’ biases and perspectives and they challenged the debaters through intense questioning sessions. They provided feedback, praising the students’ remarkable public speaking and argumentation skills and advising them on ways to sharpen their leadership skills. These dialogues were a great display of teamwork, as several brains were needed to answer the subject matter experts’ questions.

EDG U.K. Academic Writing programme in London – June 8
The yearly U.K. Academic Writing programme came to a close with a trip to London. The officers presented the findings of their research to the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), our partner institution. This was an opportunity for our officers to have an engaging discussion with their subject matter experts. They displayed their best publics peaking skills to defend their theses and demonstrated strong leadership skills, such as persuasion and argumentation. They tackled a wide range of themes, ranging AI to historical figures of leadership. The experts were convinced by their critical analysis, and the discussion fostered greater mutual understanding and interoperability. Once again, many thanks to RUSI for mentoring our officers and for always being willing to deepen our long-lasting cooperation.

US trip with CHEM
Officers CHEM visited the US on a study mission this month. The head of the English Studies Department had the privilege to participate in the preparation of this trip and was invited to join the study tour.
The objective of this trip was to allow the members to understand the political-military functioning and the singularity of the American decision-making process.
This mission was an opportunity to exchange with senior American civilian and military authorities, Allied Command for Transformation, as well as France's diplomatic representations to the United Nations and in Washington.
The officers also organised a remembrance ceremony at the memorial in Yorktown.
Civic Debate Conference
The head of the English Studies Department attended the annual Civic Debate Conference hosted this year by Saint John’s University in Queens, New York. She led a workshop for the participants on the process and methodology of civic debate.
The main forum focused on the management of equity issues and the appropriate interpretation of Title VI and Title IX.
A particularly striking presentation was that of the director of debate the host institution who delivered on the applications of Jacques Lacan’s theories to debate and the art of argumentation.
Last but not least, the schedule and the topics for the upcoming academic year were thoroughly discussed to fit the interests and timing constraints of Ecole de Guerre.
