English activities at DEMS for February and March 2022
What happened this month ? Several activities were completed in February and March, 2022, at Ecole de guerre.
Exhibition
A group of faculty members fr0m the English department of the Direction de l’enseignement militaire supérieur prepared an exhibition to run parallel with the La journée nationale d'hommage aux victimes du terrorisme which this year fell on 11 March.
The genesis of this exhibition was a plan in 2020 to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the attacks in central Paris on 13 November 2015, but the pandemic meant the exhibition could not go forward. This year the Documentation Centre of the École Militaire hosted the exhibition REFRAMING- Reflections on Terrorism which still focused on 13 November 2015, but had widened its scope to other events, in both France and the wider world, and included poetry, prose, video and painting.
Live performances alongside the paintings, photos and printed poems were held on March 10 for the grand opening.
Networking
“You cannot anticipate a crisis. But you can train to be better prepared for the unexpected”.
Throughout multiple meetings, BT executives and Ecole de Guerre officers got together to share experience on the theme of leadership. They recounted challenging experiences that sharpened their decision making and crisis management skills, discussed how to sustain motivation through hardships, and tried to imagine tomorrow’s strategic environment.
Thanks to BT for making this possible and partaking in this opportunity for officers to practice their networking skills and to contribute to greater civilian-military cooperation and mutual understanding.
Debating
QMUL debaters and the Ecole de Guerre debate team challenged each other in an essential reflection on the transformation of media and its role in our society. Debaters covered both civilian and military perspectives through the use of rigorous argumentation to prove their point.
This event falls into a long-lasting cooperation between Ecole de Guerre and QMUL, designed to reinforce the officer's interoperability with civil society and improve their leadership skills through debate.
Thanks to QMUL for yet another successful and enriching event!
Ecole de guerre welcomed a delegation fr0m the US Army War College to engage in a challenging debate on democratic resilience in the 21st century. To foster interoperability, the participants debated in blended teams, using their best public speaking skills to convince the judges and the audience. Beyond encouraging the officers to reflect on democratic values, this was the opportunity to practice key leadership skills such as quick thinking, bias assessment and argumentation.
Our American fellows also took the time out of their busy days to share perspectives with the officers fr0m the Academic writing group on subjects ranging fr0m the grey zone to disinformation in Africa.
Thanks to USAWC for their collaboration in the creation of this first in-person debate and for making it so enriching.
Speeches change the world: socially, politically and academically. With this idea in mind, the officers took part once again to World Speech Day. Due to the circumstances, they could not participate to the livestream but still recorded a message that may in the future be uploaded on the WSD website. This was an opportunity to practice their speech writing and delivery skills, as well as to share meaningful experience and reflect on the theme of leadership.
