The armed forces' CBRN capabilities mobilised to provide security for the Olympic and Paralympic Games
As part of the security arrangements for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, military resources for defence against chemical, biological, nuclear and radiological risks and threats will help to support specialists from the domestic security and civil security forces throughout France.
Placed under the authority of the Prime Minister, the central interdepartmental technical intervention detachment is made up of a pool of identified experts from a number of ministries, forming the first line of players in the event of a CBRN-e (CBRN and explosives) event. Should a major event take place, the armed forces could be called upon to provide a second curtain of CBRN response on national territory.
In the specific context of providing security for the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Central Interdepartmental Technical Response Detachment has asked the armed forces to provide CBRN assets. Teams of researchers in the nuclear, radiological and chemical fields, as well as biological sampling three-personnel teams, will reinforce the resources of the Central Interdepartmental Technical Response detachment.
As of the end of June and until the closing ceremony of the Olympic and Paralympic, the armed forces' CBRN resources, in support of the Central Interdepartmental Technical Response detachment, will be involved in clearing the competition sites and ensuring that there are no CBRN risks or threats.
At the same time, throughout the competition, the armed forces will be able to intervene, on request and in addition to the domestic and civil security forces, by setting up decontamination chains for first responders and by deploying capabilities for detecting and identifying potential threats.
In the Paris area, a CBRN squadron comprising more than 100 soldiers from the 2nd Dragoon Regiment will be integrated into the engineer battalion deployed to provide security for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. In the other defence zones involved in the competition, Air and Space Force personnel will be pre-positioned at the air bases closest to the concerned sites, and will have decontamination assets at their disposal. A system will also be deployed to French Polynesia.
The armed forces play a full part in preventing and combating any CBRN event on the national territory. During the Olympic Games, they will act in support of the domestic and civil security forces, with a coherent system, to contribute to the success of the Olympic Games.
