Nuclear Deterrence

The French nuclear deterrent forces include strategic aircraft and submarines.

National Territory

Between 6,000 and 10,000 military personnel are deployed within the national territory to ensure internal security.

Sovereignty Forces

Sovereignty forces are present in several overseas territories:

    • Romania: 1,400 military personnel
  • Other engagements within NATO include air policing (PAP), air shielding, NATO maritime group (SNMG), and Kosovo Force (KFOR).

Approximately 2,500 military personnel are engaged in these missions.

 

European Union (EU) Missions:

  • Althea: 200 military personnel
  • ASPIDES: 100 military personnel
  • Atalanta: 250 military personnel
  • Irini: 400 military personnel
  • Other missions include EUMAM (EU military training mission) in Poland and France, and EUTM (EU military training mission) in Mozambique.

  • UNIFIL (Lebanon): 700 military personnel

  • Combined Maritime Forces: 150 military personnel

  • North Atlantic: 200 military personnel
  • Eastern Mediterranean: 250 military personnel
