AsterX 2025: defending space together
From March 17 to 28, the fifth edition of the French military space exercise AsterX will be held. Organized by the French Space Command (CDE), the event will bring together 170 French and foreign civilian and military participants at the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) in Toulouse.
Still unique in Europe, AsterX is back for another edition. For two weeks, all CDE units will be taking part in tactical and operational training to further their qualification for military space operations. During the livex period (scripted exercise time), participants will operate in a simulated space environment that is realistic, complex and interconnected with other environments. AsterX 2025 is divided into two sequences. The first allows us to deepen our national response to certain threats in a competitive phase. The second aims to strengthen cooperation with our allies in a confrontational phase.
The scenario, based on multi domain operations (MDO), is based on a command and control structure that integrates other armies and domains in depth. The challenge will be to maintain the capacity for space-based support to land, sea, air and cyber operations, taking into account their constraints and coordinating tactical actions.
Participants are confronted with the full spectrum of space warfare: from the restriction of their freedom of action to the tactical and technical constraints of a battle mobilizing all areas of conflict simultaneously. 4,000 simulated space objects, 18 space events, in all orbits, and 10 different types of threat will put their ability to cope to the test. New this year: the creation of an autonomous allied force, with which to coordinate against the opposing force.
This fifth edition includes 24 foreign military personnel from 12 nations (Australia, Canada, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Norway, Poland, South Korea, Spain, United Kingdom, United States), fully integrated into the command structure alongside CDE units. AsterX illustrates France's leading role in the military space sector, and contributes to strengthening strategic solidarity between French and allied armed forces.
The CDE's institutional partners (CNES, COE and ONERA), and its industrial partners (AGENIUM, Safran Data System, Arianegroup, Crisotech, Exotrail, DeliaStrat, Look Up and MBDA) remain fully committed to the exercise, within the framework of a relationship of extended trust as much as common interests of sustainability in the space field.
